Does Teams Operator Connect support common area phones and meeting room devices?

Microsoft Teams Calling · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Not yet. According to Microsoft's published roadmap, Operator Connect does not currently support common area phones, meeting room devices or analogue devices connected through ATAs. FirstNet uses Direct Routing for those devices, alongside Operator Connect in the same Teams tenant.

In detail

Which path each device takes:

  • Named users on Teams desktop, mobile and web: Operator Connect, managed in the Teams Admin Center.
  • Common area phones in reception, lobbies or warehouses: Direct Routing.
  • Meeting room devices: Direct Routing.
  • Analogue devices such as paging, fax and lift lines through ATAs: Direct Routing, using SBC-side routing.

This mixed design lets most users stay on the simpler Operator Connect service while the exceptions are handled properly. Both paths run over FirstNet's ICASA-licensed network, with FirstNet managing the SBCs and providing a single support channel for escalations, including joint escalations with Microsoft.

FirstNet identifies these devices in the Plan phase, when user and device design decisions are made, so nothing is left unconnected at cutover. Because Microsoft's roadmap can change, FirstNet confirms current Operator Connect support for your device types at the time of design.
