Well, I'm blown away. Forget what you thought you knew about satellite. LEO satellite is different. It's fast, responsive and built to support all the cloud apps and collaboration tools your business relies on every day. It's more affordable and flexible than you thought. You can pool data across multiple sites, or leave it in standby mode and only pay for data when you need it. Need a satellite just for a once-off event? Not even that's a problem. You can buy a once-off package: we deliver, you use, we collect. No contract. Or need a satellite while you're on the move? Perfect while driving the length and breadth of this beautiful country. And always remember, because LEO doesn't rely on terrestrial fibre or mobile towers, it gives your business a truly independent backup path. So forget what you thought you knew about satellite. Think the smarter way to stay connected. Think LEO. Now that's elevated. I'm Sonia from FirstNet. Call us.

Proven ways to use LEO

Off-grid primary

LEO as the sole connection where fibre is absent, unreliable or has prohibitive lead times.

Hybrid failover

Fibre primary with LEO as a critical backup on infrastructure that doesn't share fibre's failure modes.

SD-WAN path diversity

LEO as a diverse underlay alongside fibre or LTE, with per-site failover orchestrated by SD‑WAN.

Multi-site estates

A consistent service profile across ATMs, point-of-sale sites, clinics and branches, wherever they are.

Event connectivity

Installed the day before your event and removed the day after, with no contractual commitment.

Where LEO fits

Connectivity designed around how your business operates.

LEO can provide a primary connection where terrestrial coverage is limited, strengthen business continuity through an independent connectivity path or connect a site while permanent infrastructure is being deployed.

Primary ConnectivityConnect remote offices, operational sites and other locations where fibre or reliable terrestrial connectivity is not available.

Resilient Backup

Add an independent satellite path alongside fibre or LTE/5G to reduce reliance on terrestrial infrastructure and maintain access to critical systems during an outage.

Reach Hard-to-Connect Locations

Bring mines, farms, lodges, depots, regional branches and temporary project sites online without waiting for fibre construction, wayleaves or extensive civil works.

Keep Business Applications Running

Lower latency makes LEO more responsive than traditional satellite connectivity, supporting cloud platforms, voice, video conferencing, payments, remote access and collaboration.

Strengthen Network Resilience

A satellite connection provides a different path from terrestrial infrastructure. This can reduce the risk of your primary and backup services being affected by the same fibre cut, infrastructure failure or local network outage.

When integrated with SD-WAN, LEO can support intelligent failover and application-aware traffic routing between available connections.

Simplify Network Management

Integrate LEO with fibre, LTE/5G, SD-WAN and security under one managed connectivity environment, with one partner responsible for the overall outcome

What your site needs

We validate site readiness before installation so there are no surprises on the day.

  • Clear view of the sky, usually a roof or open area
  • A secure mounting position on the building or site
  • Power available where the equipment will be installed
  • Site access for installation, including permits or safety inductions
  • Accurate GPS coordinates that plot to the installation roof

Why FirstNet?

The satellite provides the connection. FirstNet manages the environment around it.

FirstNet designs, integrates and manages LEO as part of your wider network.

This gives your business a coordinated connectivity solution rather than another standalone service that your IT team must monitor and manage separately.

  • Integration with fibre, LTE/5G, SD-WAN and security
  • Proactive monitoring and service management
  • Coordinated support across technologies and providers
  • One accountable partner for your connectivity environment

One connection provides access. A managed connectivity environment provides infrastructure.

LEO Satellite Connectivity questions

Straight answers from the FirstNet team.

Why choose FirstNet LEO satellite

How is LEO different from traditional satellite?

Traditional geostationary satellites operate much farther from Earth, resulting in higher latency.

LEO satellites operate closer to Earth, reducing latency and improving the responsiveness of applications such as voice, video conferencing, cloud platforms and remote access.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Is LEO as fast as fibre?

Fibre remains the preferred option for speed, latency and consistency where it is available.

LEO provides a strong business-grade alternative where fibre is not feasible. It can also provide an independent connectivity path alongside fibre where greater resilience is required.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Can LEO be used as a backup connection?

Yes. LEO can be particularly valuable as a backup because the satellite path is independent of many terrestrial fibre routes and network failure points.

When integrated with SD-WAN, FirstNet can configure intelligent failover and traffic routing between LEO, fibre, LTE/5G and other available connections.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

How quickly can a site be connected?

LEO can generally be deployed faster than a new fibre build, making it well suited to remote, temporary and newly established sites.

Actual deployment times depend on the site requirements, equipment availability and installation conditions.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Does weather affect LEO satellite connectivity?

Like all satellite technologies, LEO connectivity can be affected by severe weather conditions.

Where business continuity is critical, FirstNet can incorporate LEO into a multi-link connectivity design, using additional connectivity paths and intelligent failover to improve overall network resilience.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Can FirstNet integrate LEO with our existing network?

Yes. This is where FirstNet adds value beyond the satellite connection itself.

We can integrate LEO with fibre, LTE/5G, SD-WAN, firewalls and other connectivity services to create a managed, resilient network environment aligned to your business requirements.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Can LEO carry voice calls and Teams meetings?

Yes. With typical latency of around 50–80 ms, OneWeb supports VoIP, video conferencing and cloud applications at business grade, and pairs with FirstNet's cloud PBX.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

What happens during installation?

We confirm site readiness, book an install slot, then install the antenna, activate the service and enable monitoring. Finally, we confirm your support contacts, ticket channels and escalation path.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Will heavy obstructions affect the service?

Dense tree canopy or structures in the antenna's field of view can affect performance, so we validate obstructions during site readiness before committing to an installation.

Should LEO replace our fibre?

No. Where viable fibre exists, it remains the better primary. LEO is the right answer where fibre is absent, slow or unreliable, or where you need a genuinely independent backup path.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Is FirstNet's LEO satellite service licensed in South Africa?

Yes. FirstNet's LEO satellite service runs on Eutelsat OneWeb and is delivered in South Africa through ICASA-licensed partner arrangements, so it is fully compliant for South African sites. FirstNet itself is ICASA-licensed for ECS and ECNS, ISO 27001 certified and a B-BBEE Level 1 contributor, and provides managed installation, monitoring and support as the single accountable provider.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Is LEO satellite better than a microwave link?

It depends on the site. LEO needs no tower build and no line-of-sight relay, so it activates faster in remote regions, difficult terrain, long-distance or temporary deployments. Where a stable line of sight is available, an engineered microwave link can outperform LEO for enterprise use. FirstNet assesses both during feasibility and recommends the option that fits your site and resilience goals.

Full answer in the Knowledge Hub

Should we use LEO satellite or LTE/5G for a remote or backup link?

LEO is independent of mobile towers, more predictable where cellular coverage is rural or unstable, and better suited to mission-critical uptime and consistent service across an estate of sites. LTE/5G can be lower cost for light use or urban failover where coverage is strong. Many critical sites use both alongside fibre, with SD-WAN steering traffic between them.
