Connectivity
Popular connectivity questions
Which internet exchanges does FirstNet peer at?
FirstNet peers directly at NAPAfrica, JINX, CINX and DINX in South Africa, and maintains international transit and peering at hubs including LINX London, New York, Frankfurt and Singapore.
Can FirstNet SD-WAN run on a single internet link?
FirstNet does not recommend it. SD-WAN needs at least two links per site to deliver failover and path selection, and best practice is two diverse underlays, often one fibre and one wireless.
How does FirstNet monitor business internet links?
Every FirstNet-managed router is added to FirstNet's PRTG monitoring platform, with SNMP-based up/down alerting and bandwidth monitoring. FirstNet's Network Operations Centre (NOC) responds to incidents and works with the carrier on repairs.
Can we add a backup link to FirstNet business fibre?
Yes, and FirstNet recommends it for any site where downtime costs revenue. Licensed microwave gives air-versus-trench diversity, LTE/5G or fixed wireless gives fast failover, and a secondary fibre on another carrier adds carrier redundancy.
Which cloud platforms does FirstNet peer with directly?
FirstNet runs direct private peering with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud and major content delivery networks (CDNs), and peers locally at the NAPAfrica, JINX, CINX and DINX internet exchanges.
Cloud
Popular cloud questions
What is FirstNet Private Cloud?
FirstNet Private Cloud is a South African-hosted Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform: a virtual data centre with virtual machines, compute, memory, tiered storage and segmented networking, without buying or running physical hardware. It runs on VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V in FirstNet data centres in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Can FirstNet back up Google Workspace?
Yes. FirstNet Google Workspace Backup, powered by Druva, protects Gmail, Google Drive including Shared Drives, Calendar and Contacts, as configured. It gives you an independent copy that you can search and restore when data is deleted or encrypted, without running any backup infrastructure.
Can FirstNet keep our backup data in South Africa?
For server and VM backups, yes: the Veeam Data Cloud Vault Non-Core catalogue used by FirstNet Backup as a Service includes South African regions, subject to availability. For Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and endpoint backup, FirstNet confirms hosting regions during qualification, because availability varies by service.
Which FirstNet cloud service should we start with?
It depends on the outcome you need most. FirstNet Private Cloud replaces on-premises servers, Backup as a Service gives you an offsite backup copy, Disaster Recovery as a Service keeps systems running during an outage and colocation hosts your own hardware. A short discovery session with FirstNet usually makes the right starting point clear.
Which certifications apply to FirstNet colocation sites?
The FirstNet Durban data centre is certified to ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO 9001. Teraco certifications are scoped per campus, so FirstNet confirms the evidence for the specific Teraco site you choose before committing to it.
Security
Popular security questions
How does FirstNet size a firewall correctly?
A firewall should be sized on your real peak inspected traffic, not on your internet line speed. FirstNet gathers sizing inputs during discovery before recommending a model or hosted option, because enabled security features and SSL inspection change the answer most.
What is Cloudflare Magic Transit, and who needs it?
Magic Transit provides always-on DDoS protection for an entire IP range. Cloudflare advertises your IP prefixes from its global network using BGP, filters malicious traffic at the edge and tunnels clean traffic back to you.
Can Cloudflare Access from FirstNet replace our VPN?
Yes. Cloudflare Access provides zero trust network access: users reach specific private applications through Cloudflare's edge after identity checks such as single sign-on, MFA and device posture, without a traditional VPN concentrator or inbound listeners on your network.
Can we trial Netskope SSE with FirstNet before we commit?
Yes. FirstNet can run a structured Proof of Value (POV) that tests your main Netskope use case with a small group of users in your own environment, against success criteria agreed upfront, so you can make a confident decision and build an internal business case.
How does FirstNet handle changes to our managed firewall?
Firewall changes follow approved workflows with testing and rollback plans to keep your network stable. Only your authorised technical contacts can request and approve changes, and FirstNet implements them through its Rapid Response service process.
Voice
Popular voice questions
What is the FirstNet Smartz Contact Centre?
FirstNet Smartz Contact Centre is a cloud contact centre (CCaaS) and customer-experience platform from Smartz Solutions, delivered and supported by FirstNet on one contract. One Smartz Suite tenant has four modules: Commz for omnichannel engagement, Engage for workforce management, Analyz for analytics and reporting, and Smartz Academy for role-based training.
Which Zoom Phone licence do I need from FirstNet?
Most named users need Zoom Phone Pro, which covers calling, voicemail, basic call handling, presence and the mobile, desktop and desk-phone clients. Supervisors and contact-centre-style teams add the Power Pack, and shared phones use a Zoom Phone Common Area licence.
Can FirstNet Managed Cloud PBX integrate with our CRM?
Yes. CRM integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce and similar systems are available as add-ons to FirstNet Managed Cloud PBX, alongside contact-centre reporting and wallboards. Custom integrations are scoped by FirstNet's voice engineers during design.
What is a cloud PBX, and how does FirstNet deliver one?
A cloud PBX is a hosted business phone system that provides calling, collaboration and unified communications features without on-site PBX hardware. FirstNet delivers it as FirstNet Managed Cloud PBX, a fully managed service in which FirstNet designs, deploys, ports and runs your telephony.
How does FirstNet protect Zoom Phone against toll fraud?
FirstNet monitors voice traffic for fraud around the clock. Its 24/7 network operations centre (NOC) uses real-time call records and traffic anomaly detection, and premium-rate and exotic destinations, such as satellite networks, are blocked by default.
