Can FirstNet Teams Operator Connect handle lift lines, paging or fax?

Microsoft Teams Calling · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Not currently. Operator Connect does not support analogue devices through ATAs, which covers most lift lines, paging and fax, and it does not yet support common area phones or meeting room devices. FirstNet adds Direct Routing alongside Operator Connect in the same Teams tenant for these.

In detail

How the mixed design works:

  • Most users stay on Operator Connect, with numbers managed in the Teams Admin Center and no SBC to run.
  • Analogue devices such as lift lines, paging and fax connect through FirstNet's Direct Routing SBCs, which handle them with SBC-side routing.
  • Common area phones in reception, lobbies or warehouses, and meeting room devices, also use Direct Routing.
  • Both run in the same Teams tenant, on FirstNet's ICASA-licensed network, with one support path.

These limits come from Microsoft's published Operator Connect roadmap, so FirstNet identifies them during discovery rather than after go-live. FirstNet's voice engineers scope your analogue inventory, including each lift, paging zone and fax line, in the design phase so every device has a planned path.

Direct Routing can also coexist with an on-premises PBX, so some legacy endpoints can stay on the existing system during migration.
