Do we have to replace MPLS all at once to move to a modern network?

Modern Network · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. FirstNet moves sites in phases: a Peplink router can run your MPLS line alongside internet links while each site moves across.

In detail: Replacing MPLS in phases

A typical path:

  • Pilot one site: add FirstNet broadband next to the existing MPLS line and steer selected traffic over it
  • Move users to Cloudflare zero trust access, so private apps no longer depend on the MPLS core
  • Retire MPLS site by site as contracts end, keeping a hybrid design where an application still needs it

This keeps every site online during the move and spreads the change over contract renewal dates rather than a single cutover weekend.
