What does carrier-neutral business connectivity mean, and is FirstNet carrier-neutral?

Connectivity · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Carrier-neutral means your connectivity is not tied to one network operator or one technology. FirstNet is carrier-neutral: its reach spans every major fibre network operator and mobile network operator in South Africa, and each site gets the best available combination of fibre, microwave, fixed wireless, LTE/5G and LEO satellite.

In detail

The choice at each site is made on coverage, performance and resilience, not on which network a provider happens to own. For fibre, FirstNet works with major ICASA-licensed fibre network operators such as Vumatel, Frogfoot, Openserve and MetroFibre, procuring Layer 2 access circuits and running its own internet service over them from the FirstNet core. For LTE/5G it selects the mobile network with the best signal and service quality at each site.

What this means for you:

  • Primary and backup links can sit on different carriers and media, so a single network outage does not become your outage.
  • Coastal, rural and industrial sites can be served within one design.
  • You still get one contract, one unified SLA and one 24/7 NOC number across every site.

Neutrality does not mean shortcuts: every last mile FirstNet uses comes from ICASA-licensed operators on approved spectrum.
