Which mobile network will our FirstNet LTE/5G business connection use?

Wireless Connectivity · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

FirstNet is carrier-agnostic for LTE/5G, so it selects the mobile network operator with the best signal and service quality at each site rather than defaulting to one network. Coverage is nationwide wherever LTE/5G signal is present.

In detail

How the network is chosen and delivered:

  • FirstNet checks coverage maps or runs an on-site signal test to pick the strongest network at your address.
  • The service uses a RICA-registered SIM in a pre-configured, FirstNet-managed router.
  • Speed profiles follow the underlying network plan, with higher speeds possible on 5G.
  • FirstNet optimises signal and monitors the link.

Because the network is chosen per site, a multi-site estate is not tied to one operator's weak spots. LTE/5G is often live within a few working days, which makes it the lead option for temporary sites, pop-ups, construction sites, vehicles and portable units, and a cost-effective failover for fibre.

LTE/5G is best-effort with no fixed uptime SLA, because performance varies with network load and signal. Static IPs are available as an option, and FirstNet recommends one for VPN or remote access, since mobile networks often use shared, dynamic addressing by default.
