Short answer
Often, yes. Not all business data lives in OneDrive or Google Drive, and files kept only on a device can be lost if the device is lost, fails or is hit by local ransomware. FirstNet Endpoint Backup, powered by Druva, protects selected user and device data on Windows, macOS and Linux laptops and desktops.
In detail
Why sync is not the same as backup:
- Files saved outside synced folders are not copied to the cloud at all
- Ransomware can encrypt synced files, and the encrypted versions sync too
- A lost, stolen or failed laptop takes any unsynced work with it
- Sync keeps copies current, but it is not an independent copy you can restore from
Endpoint Backup is licensed per protected device, with no backup servers to run. It does not cover Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace application data, which needs its own backup subscription, so organisations often combine Endpoint Backup with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace Backup.
Endpoint backup is most valuable in laptop-heavy organisations where business-critical data lives outside OneDrive or Drive. If nobody owns monitoring and restores, the optional FirstNet Managed Backup Service can run it for you, including restore support when a device is lost or fails.
