Doesn't Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace already back up our data?

Data Protection & Ransomware Resilience · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Not in the way most organisations assume. Microsoft and Google keep their platforms available, but under the shared-responsibility model, recovering deleted or encrypted data and keeping long-term retention is up to you. FirstNet Cloud Backup Services, powered by Druva, give you an independent copy, so recovery does not depend on the platform you are trying to recover.

In detail

Common situations where an independent backup helps:

  • A user or administrator deletes important mail, files or a SharePoint site
  • Ransomware encrypts files that then sync to OneDrive or Google Drive
  • You need to recover data beyond the platform's retention settings
  • You need to show auditors that data can be restored

FirstNet Microsoft 365 Backup covers Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint Online, Teams, Groups and Microsoft Entra ID, as configured. FirstNet Google Workspace Backup covers Gmail, Drive including Shared Drives, Calendar and Contacts. Both are licensed per protected user, with no backup servers to run and no storage-cap planning.

Retention features inside the platform, such as Microsoft Purview or Google Vault, serve compliance and eDiscovery rather than independent restore, so many regulated organisations use both. An optional managed service adds FirstNet-run monitoring and restore support.
