Do we need to run backup servers to protect Microsoft 365 with FirstNet?

Data Protection & Ransomware Resilience · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. FirstNet Cloud Backup Services, powered by Druva, are cloud-native, so there are no backup servers or storage for you to buy, install or maintain. You choose the workloads to protect, and the service keeps an independent copy you can restore from.

In detail

What you choose:

  • Microsoft 365 Backup: Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint Online, Teams, Groups and Entra ID, per protected user
  • Google Workspace Backup: Gmail, Drive including Shared Drives, Calendar and Contacts, per protected user
  • Endpoint Backup: selected data on Windows, macOS and Linux devices, per protected device
  • Managed Backup Service: an optional add-on in which FirstNet handles implementation, monitoring, remediation, reporting and restore support

You can combine these in any mix under a single FirstNet contract. Because there is no infrastructure to run, the main operational question is who monitors jobs, fixes failures and handles restores, including after hours. If you do not have staff for that, the Managed Backup Service fills the gap.

For on-premises or hosted servers and virtual machines, FirstNet Backup as a Service uses Veeam instead: your environment runs Veeam Backup & Replication and sends encrypted copies to a FirstNet cloud vault.
