Can FirstNet LEO satellite be used as a backup internet connection?

LEO Satellite Connectivity · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes. LEO can be particularly valuable as a backup because the satellite path is independent of many terrestrial fibre routes and network failure points. Integrated with SD-WAN, FirstNet can configure intelligent failover and traffic routing between LEO, fibre, LTE/5G and other connections.

In detail

Why LEO makes a strong backup:

  • Independence: it does not rely on terrestrial fibre or mobile towers, reducing the chance of primary and backup failing together.
  • Hybrid failover: fibre primary with LEO as a critical backup on infrastructure that does not share fibre's failure modes.
  • SD-WAN path diversity: LEO as a diverse underlay alongside fibre or LTE, with per-site failover.
  • Bonding: with Peplink, satellite and LTE/5G can be bonded so live sessions continue through a link cut.

Compared with LTE/5G as a backup, LEO is independent of mobile towers and more predictable where cellular coverage is rural or unstable, while LTE/5G can be lower cost for light use or urban failover where coverage is strong. Many critical sites use both alongside fibre.

FirstNet manages the LEO link like any other part of your network, with proactive monitoring, service management and coordinated support from one accountable partner.
