How does FirstNet handle changes to our managed firewall?

Hosted Firewall & Network Security · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Firewall changes follow approved workflows with testing and rollback plans to keep your network stable. Only your authorised technical contacts can request and approve changes, and FirstNet implements them through its Rapid Response service process.

In detail

How changes are controlled:

  • Standard moves, adds and changes within the agreed policy framework are handled as part of the managed service
  • Emergency, after-hours and major design changes, such as new VPNs, SD-WAN topology changes or large policy refactors, need explicit approval and may be scoped separately
  • On Fortinet estates run through FortiManager, every policy install needs an install preview, peer review and a documented rollback step, with one-click rollback to a known-good configuration
  • Rollouts can be staged and scheduled across sites
  • On Sophos, all changes are logged and audit-traceable through Sophos Central audit logs

FirstNet also keeps change records and monthly summaries, and FortiManager reports policy revisions and firmware drift so the estate stays aligned.

Large redesigns, migrations and security audits are scoped as projects outside the standard managed service, so confirm your expected change volume when you contract.
