Is Cloudflare Zero Trust from FirstNet just a web proxy replacement?

Secure Access & SSE · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. A secure web gateway is often the first step, but Cloudflare Zero Trust also covers app access, cloud app control, DLP and browser isolation.

In detail: Is Cloudflare Zero Trust just a web proxy?

What Cloudflare One includes:

  • Cloudflare Gateway: a secure web gateway with DNS and web filtering for internet and SaaS traffic
  • Cloudflare Access: zero trust access to private applications in place of a VPN
  • CASB: visibility and control of cloud apps, including shadow IT and AI tool usage
  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP): stops sensitive data leaving through web, SaaS and AI tools
  • Browser Isolation: opens risky web content in an isolated session
  • Digital Experience Monitoring: shows how apps and networks perform for each user

All of these share one dashboard, one device client (the Cloudflare One Client) and one policy engine, and run on Cloudflare's global network, which includes data centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.

A common path is to replace an ageing proxy or VPN first, then add CASB, DLP and browser isolation once the first service is proving its value. FirstNet designs, deploys and optionally runs each step.
