What is BIMI, and how can FirstNet get our logo shown in email inboxes?

Email Security & Threat Protection · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) displays your verified brand logo next to your emails in supporting mailbox clients such as Gmail, Apple Mail and Yahoo. It only works once your DMARC policy is enforced at p=quarantine or p=reject, and most mailbox providers also require a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC), which is backed by a registered trade mark.

In detail

FirstNet's optional BIMI add-on to its managed SendMarc service covers:

  • Publishing the BIMI DNS record
  • Hosting your logo in the required SVG format
  • Help procuring the Verified Mark Certificate where it is required

The order of work matters. FirstNet first takes your domain through the DMARC journey: discovering every sending source, aligning SPF and DKIM, then enforcing quarantine or reject. BIMI is deployed after enforcement. If your brand does not yet have a registered trade mark, the route to BIMI is staged until a certificate can be obtained.

BIMI is also a visible sign that your domain is properly protected against spoofing, so it is worth involving your marketing and brand team early in the DMARC project.
