Short answer
Before a Microsoft 365 migration starts, FirstNet runs a tenant readiness review covering your licence mix, identity setup, MFA coverage, conditional access, Defender baseline, Purview and SharePoint permissions. You then sign off a prioritised remediation backlog before workload delivery begins.
In detail
What the review checks:
- Licence mix: whether users have the right Microsoft 365 plans for what they need
- Identity: how accounts are set up, including any hybrid identity with on-premises Active Directory
- MFA and conditional access: how sign-ins are protected
- Defender and Purview: your security baseline, labelling and data governance
- SharePoint permissions: who can see what, which also matters for a later Copilot rollout
The tenant readiness review and pilot cohort typically take 3 to 6 weeks. Migration then usually runs as a pilot group first, followed by migration waves and a final cutover, with user adoption support along the way.
The same review is part of moving your licences to FirstNet as partner of record, so inherited security gaps are documented and prioritised rather than carried forward. Fixing them first means the migrated tenant starts from a clean, secure baseline.
