Short answer
Hybrid identity connects your on-premises Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID, using Entra Connect or Cloud Sync, so people use one identity across on-premises systems and cloud apps. FirstNet often sets it up as the first step before a wider Microsoft 365 rollout or security upgrade.
In detail
What it enables:
- Single sign-on to Microsoft 365 and other software-as-a-service applications
- Multi-factor authentication across those applications
- Conditional access policies that control who can sign in, from where and on which devices
- Group-based licence assignment, which depends on clean identity data
- A foundation for Copilot, which relies on accurate identities and permissions
It is most relevant if you will keep on-premises Active Directory while adopting cloud services, which is common during a phased migration. Even if you are moving fully to the cloud, identity needs careful design, and FirstNet covers it in the identity design stage of a Microsoft 365 migration.
FirstNet checks identity setup, MFA coverage and conditional access as part of the tenant readiness review, and Entra ID P1, P2 and Governance licences can be supplied through FirstNet's Microsoft CSP agreement.
