Short answer
Every FirstNet-managed router is added to FirstNet's PRTG monitoring platform, with SNMP-based up/down alerting and bandwidth monitoring. FirstNet's Network Operations Centre (NOC) responds to incidents and works with the carrier on repairs.
In detail
Monitoring starts at handover: once installation and testing are complete, the link moves to the NOC for proactive monitoring and incident response. FirstNet monitors business connectivity environments on a 24x7 basis and looks at real-world performance rather than simple line availability, including:
- Latency, packet loss and jitter
- Link utilisation and bandwidth trends
- Early signs of degradation and emerging faults
- Automated alerting and escalation when thresholds are breached
- Coordinated fault management across multiple providers and technologies
Monitored links also come with alerts and monthly service reviews. The managed router is what makes this possible: it is FirstNet's view into the link, which is why FirstNet's standard is a managed router with your own firewall connected behind it. For context, SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is the standard way network devices report their status, and PRTG is the monitoring system that collects those readings and raises alerts.
