How do I update the DNS records for a domain that FirstNet hosts?

Support · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Ask one of your authorised contacts to send the change in writing to support@firstnet.co.za. FirstNet checks the record, then saves it.

In detail: Update DNS records: how to request a change

This applies where FirstNet hosts your domain's DNS zone on its primary and secondary name servers. FirstNet acts only on instructions from the people your business has named in writing as authorised contacts. It checks each change against the instruction before saving it and records the change in its ticketing system.

What to include in the request:

  • The domain name and your company name
  • The record type, for example A, CNAME, MX or TXT
  • The host name and the new value, and whether the record is being added, changed or removed
  • The time-to-live (TTL), if you need a specific one

DNS changes can take 24 to 48 hours, or longer depending on record TTL settings, to take effect across the internet. FirstNet does not control that timing on resolvers outside its own name servers. DNSSEC signing is not included unless your service schedule says so.

If your DNS is hosted elsewhere, for example with your registrar or website host, make the change in that provider's control panel. To move DNS hosting to FirstNet, provide your current DNS records so the zone can be set up. Transferring the domain itself needs it unlocked at the current registrar and its transfer (Auth or EPP) code, and usually takes 5 to 10 calendar days. If you later move a domain away from FirstNet, arrange new DNS hosting before the transfer.
