Short answer
FirstNet engineers the voice path it controls: ICASA-licensed termination, South African interconnects and fraud-monitored routing. Quality on your own internet, LAN and Wi-Fi depends on bandwidth, jitter and packet loss, which FirstNet checks before deployment.
In detail
What FirstNet checks before go-live:
- Bandwidth on your internet link, planned at about 100 Kbps per concurrent call plus 20% headroom.
- Latency, jitter and packet loss against voice targets: one-way latency under 150 ms, jitter under 30 ms and loss under 1%.
- Firewall, NAT and edge configuration.
- Quality of service at the access layer, so voice traffic is prioritised.
- Endpoints such as headsets, USB phones or soft clients, and home-worker connectivity for hybrid staff.
FirstNet does not claim a guaranteed MOS (Mean Opinion Score) over best-effort internet. It engineers the path it controls and documents the dependencies on the path it does not.
Where your connection is the weak point, FirstNet managed connectivity, such as fibre, SD-WAN or wireless backup, can strengthen the underlay. A pilot group on Zoom Phone also proves quality on your own network before the full rollout.
