Can our users keep working during a FirstNet DRaaS failover?

Backup & Disaster Recovery as a Service · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes, when access is planned in advance. FirstNet designs access and routing so key functions stay online while recovery proceeds, with users and administrators reaching recovered systems in the FirstNet DR site through an agreed secure access model.

In detail

What makes this work:

  • Reserved compute, memory and storage, so replicas can start without waiting for capacity
  • Failover of single VMs or whole groups, in an agreed recovery order
  • A network model for the DR site, using the same IP ranges or new ranges with address translation
  • Secure access, such as a hosted firewall VDOM and VPN, scoped in your proposal
  • Ready dependencies, including DNS and Active Directory

During a DR event you declare the incident, replicas are started in the DR site, users connect through the agreed access model, and systems run from DR while your primary site is restored. Failback then returns services to the primary site under change control.

Users can only work straight away if dependencies and secure access are ready and the failover order has been agreed and tested. That is why FirstNet captures these details during onboarding and validates them in DR tests.
