Does FirstNet DRaaS support physical servers?

Backup & Disaster Recovery as a Service · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Not through replication. FirstNet DRaaS replication is for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines. Physical servers are protected with FirstNet Backup as a Service instead, and in a disaster their backups can be restored into new virtual machines in the FirstNet DR environment.

In detail

How the recovery patterns differ:

  • Virtual machines: replicated into reserved DR capacity and started as replicas during failover, which is the preferred DR architecture
  • Physical servers: backed up with agents to the offsite vault, then restored into a new VM in the DR site when needed
  • Physical-to-virtual and physical-to-physical replication: not supported

The recover-from-backup approach still makes physical workloads recoverable, but you should expect a longer recovery time than with VM-based replication, because each server has to be restored before it can run.

During discovery, FirstNet records which workloads are virtual and which are physical, so that recovery expectations for each are clear in your design. If a physical system is business-critical, raise it early so its recovery time objective can be set realistically and the right mix of Backup as a Service and DRaaS can be scoped.
