Is backup enough, or do we also need FirstNet Disaster Recovery as a Service?

Backup & Disaster Recovery as a Service · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

For true continuity, usually not. Backups protect your data, but FirstNet Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) restores entire services quickly by running them from a FirstNet data centre, so organisations with critical systems typically need both.

In detail

What each one does:

  • Backup as a Service: recovers files, application items or whole servers after deletion, corruption or ransomware, from an immutable offsite copy
  • DRaaS: keeps ready-to-run replicas of your virtual machines on reserved compute, memory and storage, so systems can run during an outage
  • Both together: day-to-day recoverability plus the ability to keep operating through a site failure

Backup alone can be enough when you mainly need retention and restores, and your business can tolerate the time it takes to rebuild servers. DRaaS becomes important when specific systems must keep running and you have clear recovery time targets, for example during a primary site failure, an extended power outage, ransomware recovery or a facility-level disaster.

Physical servers are protected through backup and can be restored into virtual machines in the FirstNet DR environment, with a longer recovery time than replicated VMs. A FirstNet DR readiness workshop can tier your applications and show where each option fits.
