Short answer
No. Backup recovers data after deletion, corruption or ransomware, while disaster recovery keeps reserved capacity ready so whole systems can run from a second site during an outage. FirstNet offers both, Backup as a Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS), on the same Veeam platform, and many businesses need both.
In detail
The practical differences:
- Purpose: BaaS protects and restores data; DRaaS keeps workloads running for business continuity
- Capacity: BaaS reserves no compute; DRaaS reserves vCPU, memory and replica storage for you in advance
- Recovery: BaaS restores files, application items or full servers; DRaaS starts replicas of your virtual machines in a FirstNet data centre
- Workloads: BaaS covers virtual machines and physical servers; DRaaS replication covers VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines
Choose BaaS when you mainly need backup copies, retention and file or server restores. Add DRaaS when specific systems must keep running through a site outage and you have clear recovery time and recovery point objectives. Physical servers are protected with BaaS and, in a disaster, can be restored into virtual machines in the FirstNet DR environment.
