What do we need before rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot with FirstNet?

Microsoft Licensing · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Before rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot with FirstNet, each user needs a qualifying plan: Microsoft 365 E3, E5, Business Standard or Business Premium. A clean rollout also needs Purview labels and tidy SharePoint permissions, and FirstNet recommends a pilot first.

In detail

Copilot is an add-on you buy per user. FirstNet recommends a pilot with a set group, typically 50 to 100 users over 6 to 8 weeks, before you scale. Here is a practical checklist to get ready:

  • Licences: each user needs one of the qualifying Microsoft 365 plans.
  • Identity: a clean base in Microsoft Entra ID, with MFA and conditional access.
  • Data labels: Purview sensitivity labels, so sensitive content is classified.
  • Permissions: clean up SharePoint and Teams access, because Copilot shows whatever a user can already open.
  • Adoption: training and change management, so people know how to use it well.

Copilot works across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. You can also get Copilot Studio through FirstNet's CSP agreement. Copilot is an annual commitment by default. That is another reason FirstNet usually quotes a pilot group first.

FirstNet runs the tenant readiness review, the Purview and SharePoint permission clean-up and adoption support alongside the licences. The pilot tracks adoption and value, so you can decide whether to scale on evidence, not guesswork.
