Is speed guaranteed on FirstNet business fibre broadband?

Fibre Connectivity · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. Standard FirstNet business fibre is best-effort beyond FirstNet's core network, so throughput can vary with wider internet conditions, and a web-based speed test on its own is not treated as proof of under-performance. If your site needs committed bandwidth, the right service is Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) or a dedicated fibre variant.

In detail

Best-effort does not mean unmanaged. Standard business fibre is:

  • Uncontended on local (on-net) traffic
  • Subject to international contention of at most 1:4, and only during undersea cable failures
  • Carried across seven or more undersea cable systems with automatic rerouting
  • Monitored through a FirstNet-managed router on PRTG, including bandwidth

Speed tests are only a rough guide, because the result also depends on the test server, the route to it and the device running it, not just on your link.

DIA is the step up when performance must be enforceable. It gives dedicated 1:1 contention on local and international traffic, symmetric committed bandwidth that does not degrade at peak, and defined SLAs with service credits. A dedicated fibre variant can also be designed case by case for mission-critical sites.
