Short answer
FirstNet Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) runs over approved fibre from operators licensed by ICASA, in line with ECS and ECNS rules. It is a Layer 3 service into the FirstNet core, and it may not run over unlicensed access technology.
In detail
The layers that make up the service:
- Access: approved fibre from ICASA-licensed operators, if a carrier can serve your site.
- Service: a Layer 3 link into the FirstNet core, with static public IP addresses and enterprise routing.
- Core network: FirstNet's own Autonomous System, with diverse upstream providers. It peers directly at NAPAfrica, JINX, CINX and DINX.
- International: peering at global hubs such as London, New York, Brazil, Germany, Marseilles and Singapore. Traffic crosses seven undersea cable systems, with automatic rerouting.
Contention is a dedicated 1:1 on local and international traffic. Bandwidth is symmetric (the same speed up and down) and committed. Delivery depends on whether a carrier can serve your address. FirstNet confirms this before provisioning, installation and handover to support.
Because DIA runs over fibre, a site that fibre cannot reach needs a different primary link, such as licensed microwave. FirstNet can design that site as part of the same estate.
