Can we test FirstNet SIP trunks before switching from our current voice carrier?

Business Voice Minutes · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes. FirstNet can run a small SIP trunk in parallel into your existing PBX, so you can prove call quality before staging the full migration at your own pace. Your current carrier stays in place until you are ready to move.

In detail

How a parallel trial and migration usually run:

  • Prepare: PBX firmware and SIP-compliance review, a firewall and NAT walkthrough and an IP whitelist plan.
  • Plan: channel sizing, codecs, backup trunk sizing, porting scope and an agreed cutover and rollback plan.
  • Provision: FirstNet sets up trunks, numbers and the voice plan, and your PBX is configured with FirstNet runbook support.
  • Pilot: end-to-end test calls (inbound, outbound, transfer, hold and internal), caller ID checks, backup failover tests and a pilot group of users or sites.
  • Production: number porting cutover, the remaining users, monitoring and tuning, then handover to ongoing support.

After cutover, FirstNet's service delivery team provides 30 days of post-cutover hyper-care. Part of your old estate can also keep running alongside during migration, which suits businesses moving off copper lines or legacy PBXs in stages.
