What are VC minutes and on-net minutes?

Business Voice Minutes · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

On-net minutes are calls that stay on one provider's network. VC minutes has no single industry meaning, so check your provider's definition. FirstNet bills calls per second, by destination type.

In detail

On-net and off-net: in general, an on-net call starts and ends on the same operator's network, while an off-net call crosses to another operator, such as a call from a business line to a mobile network. Many providers price on-net calls lower because no other network is involved. Calls between extensions on the same phone system usually stay inside the PBX and never reach the public network.

VC minutes: the term appears on some price lists and contracts, but providers do not use it consistently. If a quote or bill lists VC minutes, ask the provider to state in writing which calls count against them and how they are rated.

How FirstNet bills calls:

  • Calls run on a voice plan: Voice Bundles with a fixed number of inclusive minutes, or Voice Rate Options with per-minute rates.
  • Billing is per second, so short calls are not rounded up to full minutes.
  • Local geographic, mobile, international and premium-rate destinations are rated differently.
  • Calls reach Telkom, Vodacom, MTN, Cell C and other licensees through FirstNet's direct interconnects.

Because pricing depends on traffic volume, destination mix and routing requirements, FirstNet prepares a customised rate card from your call profile. Comparing rate cards destination by destination is a fairer test than comparing headline minute counts between providers.
