What happens to FirstNet cloud voice calls during load-shedding?

Voice · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Cloud voice keeps working during load-shedding as long as your site's network equipment stays powered. The phone system runs in the cloud, so the weak point is the router, switches and phones on your premises, which is why FirstNet checks UPS runtime as part of deployment readiness.

In detail

What FirstNet checks before go-live:

  • UPS runtime for the comms cabinet, covering the switch, router and any PoE injectors.
  • Desk-side UPS cover at reception and the switchboard, so the lines callers reach first stay up.
  • PoE switching for desk phones, so handsets draw power from the protected switch instead of separate power adapters.
  • Enough runtime for reception, switchboard and sales desks to stay up through higher load-shedding stages.

Softphones add another layer. On FirstNet Managed Cloud PBX, the Linkus mobile and desktop apps let staff make and receive calls on the business number from anywhere, including from home or on the road, so calls can still be answered away from an affected office.

Where a gap is found, FirstNet's voice engineers recommend a fix, such as a UPS or inverter sized to the comms cabinet load, before cutover.
