Who qualifies for FirstNet's free backup SIP trunk?

Business Voice Minutes · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Customers who take FirstNet SIP Trunks together with FirstNet connectivity get a backup SIP trunk at no extra charge. Standalone SIP customers whose internet comes from another provider can add a backup trunk as a separate line item.

In detail

How the backup trunk works:

  • It is provisioned on a separate logical path from your primary trunk.
  • If the primary trunk loses signalling for any reason, calls reroute to the backup automatically, with no manual intervention.
  • Both trunks run on FirstNet's dual PortaOne clusters, which receive zero-downtime updates.
  • Failover to the backup is tested during the pilot phase, before full cutover.

FirstNet offers three levels of voice continuity. A single trunk suits single-site or non-critical voice where moderate downtime is acceptable. A primary plus free backup trunk is the standard set-up for FirstNet connectivity customers. Dual-carrier diversity, with documented failover, is designed for high-availability contact centres, treasury operations and mission-critical medical sites.

FirstNet's voice engineers confirm the right backup posture for each site during solution design, and connectivity can be added at the same time if you want the free backup trunk.
