Will FirstNet SIP trunks work with my existing PBX?

Business Voice Minutes · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes, if your PBX is SIP-compliant. FirstNet SIP Trunks work out of the box with most modern IP-PBXs, including Yeastar, Cisco, Avaya IP Office, Mitel, FreePBX, 3CX, Asterisk and Panasonic, as well as cloud-hosted PBXs. Older digital systems can connect through a media gateway.

In detail

What FirstNet checks before go-live:

  • PBX make, model, firmware and SIP version.
  • Codec support, with G.711 as the baseline and G.729 or Opus where required.
  • Registration mode versus trunk mode.
  • TLS and SRTP support for encrypted signalling and media.
  • Firewall and NAT set-up, and whether a session border controller is needed.

Older TDM systems using PRI, BRI or analogue lines need a media gateway in front to convert calls to SIP. That adds some complexity but does not rule the PBX out. Where a PBX is genuinely past end of life, FirstNet Managed Cloud PBX is a clean migration path, and the same trunk stays underneath, so the PBX can change later without disturbing it.

Your PBX also needs to present valid caller ID (CLI) in the correct format, because invalid CLI can be blocked upstream or charged at higher rates.
