Can we run high-density equipment in FirstNet colocation?

Colocation Services · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes, within limits. Power in FirstNet colocation scales per rack, but very dense designs may need to be spread across racks to stay within power and thermal limits, so FirstNet sizes it from your equipment list and power draw.

In detail

How power and cooling are allocated:

  • Each full rack includes a base allocation of about 2.2 kVA on redundant A and B feeds
  • Power is metered continuously and can be scaled in steps of about 1.1 kVA, typically up to about 3.3 kVA per rack
  • Cabinets are 600 mm or 800 mm wide and take equipment up to about 1.2 m deep
  • N+1 precision cooling with hot and cold aisle containment manages heat loads
  • Dense workloads can be split across several racks to stay within per-rack limits

If you run high-density hardware, such as blade servers or GPU systems, share the equipment list with power draw and cooling requirements, and your target load per rack now and in 12 months. FirstNet's data centre team validates the design. Extremely dense requirements may need a bespoke approach, such as specialised power circuits, which can affect both cost and timing, so raising them early avoids surprises at installation.
