How are FirstNet Private Cloud backups protected against ransomware?

Private Cloud Hosting & Management · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

FirstNet Private Cloud's recommended baseline uses Veeam backups to immutable storage, so recovery points cannot be changed or deleted until retention expires. Retention is sized to your needs, typically 7, 14 or 30 days.

In detail

Ransomware and malicious insiders often try to delete or encrypt backups before striking production. Immutable recovery points stay intact for the full retention period, so you keep a clean point to restore from.

Layers that protect Private Cloud workloads:

  • Veeam backup jobs writing to immutable storage, included in the recommended baseline
  • A virtual firewall, Lite or Enterprise with UTM, for segmentation and controlled access
  • Encryption of data at rest and in transit
  • Optional geographic DR to a second FirstNet data centre with a failover runbook
  • Longer offsite retention, scoped separately, for example through FirstNet Backup as a Service

Backup retention and immutability are documented in your solution design. Many customers start with a shorter retention period and extend it as compliance or recoverability requirements tighten. If you need guaranteed restore times, those are scoped separately rather than assumed. Testing restores regularly confirms that recovery works before you need it.
