What happens to our virtual machines if a FirstNet Private Cloud server fails?

Private Cloud Hosting & Management · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

FirstNet Private Cloud runs on clustered Dell PowerEdge servers with high availability at the hypervisor level. If a physical host fails, the affected virtual machines restart automatically on another host in the cluster.

In detail

How the platform handles hardware issues:

  • High availability: VMs on a failed host restart on a healthy host in the same cluster
  • Live migration: running VMs move between hosts without downtime, for maintenance or load balancing
  • Storage resilience: Infinidat arrays with built-in replication sit underneath your VM disks
  • Platform ownership: FirstNet runs and maintains the hardware, so you never manage physical servers

This protects against hardware failure inside a data centre. An automatic restart still means a short interruption for the affected VMs while they boot on the new host, so design critical applications with that in mind.

Protection against losing an entire site needs Geographic Disaster Recovery, which replicates workloads to a second FirstNet data centre with reserved capacity and a failover runbook. Backups to immutable storage protect your data separately from both. Platform incidents are handled through FirstNet's 24x7 Rapid Response service desk, and SLA terms are set out in your contract.
