What is FirstNet Private Cloud?

Private Cloud Hosting & Management · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services · Reviewed 10 October 2026

Short answer

FirstNet Private Cloud is a South African-hosted Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform: a virtual data centre with virtual machines, compute, memory, tiered storage and segmented networking, without buying or running physical hardware. It runs on VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V in FirstNet data centres in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

In detail

What is inside the platform:

  • Compute: Dell PowerEdge clusters with Intel Xeon processors, with vCPU allocated at a 2.0 GHz baseline
  • Memory: RAM allocated in 1 GB increments and adjustable as demand changes
  • Storage: Infinidat arrays with Tier 1 SSD, Tier 2 Standard and Tier 3 Archive
  • Resilience: high availability and live migration at the hypervisor layer
  • Management: the Hybr portal for provisioning, control and monitoring

A virtual firewall and immutable Veeam backups form the recommended baseline. You can add Geographic Disaster Recovery to a second FirstNet data centre, and Server Management for OS monitoring and patching in 8x5 or 24x7 tiers.

Getting started follows four steps: discovery and sizing, solution design, provisioning in Hybr, and handover to FirstNet's 24x7 Rapid Response support. FirstNet runs the platform, while you manage the OS, applications and data unless you add Server Management.
