Can FirstNet SD-WAN run on a single internet link?

SD-WAN · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

FirstNet does not recommend it. SD-WAN needs at least two links per site to deliver failover and path selection, and best practice is two diverse underlays, often one fibre and one wireless.

In detail

With only one link, SD-WAN has no alternative path to move traffic onto when the link degrades or fails, so most of its value is lost. Diverse underlays add real resilience because they tend to fail for different reasons. FirstNet's underlay options:

  • Broadband and DIA: business fibre or dedicated internet as the primary underlay
  • LTE/5G and microwave: wireless underlays that add path diversity alongside fibre
  • LEO satellite: an independent path for remote or highly critical sites
  • Hybrid MPLS: MPLS and internet links side by side for a phased migration

FirstNet validates multi-link requirements and link quality at each site during underlay feasibility, before the design goes to joint validation by its Connectivity and Security teams. Because FirstNet is carrier-agnostic, the two links can sit on different carriers as well as different media.

FirstNet can supply both links at each site, so the circuits and the overlay sit under one accountable SLA.
