Do we need new Wi-Fi access points for FirstNet Managed Guest Wi-Fi?

Managed Guest Wi-Fi · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. FirstNet Managed Guest Wi-Fi is a hardware-agnostic overlay that works with your existing Wi-Fi. New access points are only included if they are separately scoped.

In detail

The service sits on top of your current wireless network rather than replacing it. What that means in practice:

  • You provide: access to your Wi-Fi controller settings, a guest SSID or VLAN, branding assets, and approval of terms and privacy wording.
  • FirstNet provides: captive portal design per brand or venue, login configuration, site set-up, reporting access, change control and ongoing support.
  • Separately scoped: new access points, cabling, LAN upgrades, full Wi-Fi redesigns or site surveys.

Because it is an overlay, rollout is lighter than a network rebuild. FirstNet starts with discovery, runs a pilot at one to four sites, then rolls out more widely by brand or region readiness. Discovery is also where FirstNet confirms how your controllers handle limits such as bandwidth or session length.

If your existing Wi-Fi coverage is poor or you have no guest network yet, FirstNet can help plan one, and any hardware, cabling or survey work is scoped and quoted separately from the guest Wi-Fi service.
