Short answer
FirstNet colocation covers the facility: space, power, cooling, physical security and connectivity, while you own and manage your hardware, operating systems and applications. If you want FirstNet to manage servers too, FirstNet Private Cloud or separately scoped managed services are the better fit.
In detail
How responsibilities split in colocation:
- FirstNet provides rack space, redundant A and B power, cooling, physical security, connectivity options, access management and 24x7 support
- FirstNet optionally provides remote hands for basic tasks such as reboots, cable checks and visual inspections
- You provide your own servers, storage and network equipment, plus the operating systems, applications, patching, backup and monitoring, unless these are sold separately
Colocation suits organisations that want data centre resilience while keeping full control of their own hardware, for example when moving out of an ageing server room without re-architecting for cloud.
If you would rather not own hardware at all, FirstNet Private Cloud gives you virtual servers on a FirstNet-run platform, and optional Server Management adds OS monitoring, patching and support in business hours or 24x7. Backup as a Service, DRaaS and managed firewall services can also be added to colocated equipment. A discovery session confirms which model fits.
