Short answer
Yes. FirstNet IP Transit requires a valid public Autonomous System Number (ASN) and a router running BGP. If you do not have these, Dedicated Internet Access is the right managed alternative.
In detail
An ASN identifies your network in the internet's routing system, and BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) is how your router announces your IP space and exchanges routes with upstream providers. IP Transit is built on that model: it is a Layer 3, BGP-based service that gives your Autonomous System access to the global routing table through FirstNet's upstream and peering ecosystem.
What you need to connect:
- A public ASN
- A router running BGP v4
- IPv4 and/or IPv6 support
- In-house capability to manage routing policy and traffic engineering
Onboarding starts with ASN validation, where FirstNet confirms your public ASN and routing capability. Your transit port is then provisioned on the FirstNet network, FirstNet establishes the BGP session and route exchange with your router, and the service is tested end to end before handover.
You can connect to FirstNet alone or use it as one of several upstreams for resilience and traffic engineering.
