Is FirstNet IP Transit suitable for office internet?

Carrier-Grade ISP Infrastructure · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. IP Transit is a wholesale, BGP-based service for organisations that run their own network, hold a public ASN and want to control routing and traffic engineering themselves. If you want FirstNet to manage the internet service for offices or branches, Dedicated Internet Access or business broadband is the right fit.

In detail

Why IP Transit is the wrong tool for a typical office:

  • It needs a public ASN, a router running BGP v4, and in-house routing expertise.
  • Routing policy, traffic engineering, ASN and IP space compliance are your responsibility.
  • FirstNet's support covers the transit domain, backbone and ports, not your network beyond them.

IP Transit is built for ISPs and WISPs, hosting, cloud and data centre operators, CDNs, and enterprises with in-house network engineering.

For offices, choose by how critical the site is. Dedicated Internet Access gives head offices and core sites dedicated 1:1 contention, symmetric committed bandwidth, static public IPs and defined SLAs, managed end to end by FirstNet. Business broadband suits branches and serves as a cost-effective backup to DIA. In both cases FirstNet supplies the managed router, monitors the link and handles carrier escalation for you.
