Is FirstNet Protected IP Transit the same as multi-homing?

Carrier-Grade ISP Infrastructure · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

No. Protected IP Transit is redundancy engineered into FirstNet's own service design, while multi-homing is your routing strategy across more than one upstream path or provider. They solve different problems and can be used together.

In detail

The difference in practice:

  • Protected IP Transit: a FirstNet-engineered redundant service design that adds resilience to the transit FirstNet delivers. FirstNet designs and supports that redundancy.
  • Multi-homing: you connect to more than one upstream, for example FirstNet plus other providers, and use BGP to control how traffic enters and leaves your network. You design and run that policy.
  • Connection options: IP Transit supports connecting to FirstNet alone (single-homed) or using FirstNet as one of several upstreams (multi-homed).
  • Responsibility: FirstNet supports the transit backbone and ports; routing policy, traffic engineering, ASN and IP space compliance remain yours.

Many operators combine the approaches, using FirstNet as one of several upstreams for resilience and traffic engineering, and adding Protected IP Transit as traffic grows. It is one of the common upgrade paths on FirstNet IP Transit, alongside more capacity, redundant ports or dual paths, and IPv6 enablement.
