Is there a map of FirstNet's network?

National Footprint & Global Reach · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

Yes. The FirstNet network map shows where FirstNet's network, AS328366, connects: 14 internet exchanges and 7 data centres in 10 cities.

In detail: FirstNet network map: exchanges and data centres

What the network map shows in South Africa:

  • Johannesburg: NAPAfrica and JINX, with space at Teraco's Johannesburg campus in Isando
  • Cape Town: NAPAfrica and CINX, with space at Teraco CT1 and CT2
  • Durban: NAPAfrica and DINX, FirstNet's own data centre in Umhlanga Ridge, Teraco DB1 and OADC Umhlanga

Internationally, FirstNet peers at LINX in London, AMS-IX in Amsterdam, DE-CIX in Frankfurt, France-IX in Marseille, NYIIX in New York, IX.br in São Paulo, and SGIX and Equinix in Singapore. In London it is also listed at Telehouse Docklands North. Links to New York and São Paulo come into Cape Town rather than Johannesburg, so international traffic does not all depend on one city.

The map is built from FirstNet's public record on PeeringDB, the database networks use to publish where they peer, so anyone can check it, plus FirstNet's own list of its data centres. It lists exchanges and buildings only, not link capacities.

Peering at an exchange means FirstNet swaps traffic directly with other networks there, so your traffic takes a shorter path, and South African traffic stays in South Africa.
