Short answer
FirstNet peers directly at NAPAfrica, JINX, CINX and DINX in South Africa, and maintains international transit and peering at hubs including LINX London, New York, Frankfurt and Singapore.
In detail
An internet exchange point (IXP) is where networks connect to swap traffic directly rather than through third parties. Peering at the major South African exchanges means local traffic reaches local services by a short path:
- NAPAfrica: the exchange hosted in Teraco data centres, where FirstNet peers in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban
- JINX: the Johannesburg Internet Exchange
- CINX: the Cape Town Internet Exchange
- DINX: the Durban Internet Exchange
FirstNet operates its own Autonomous System (AS328366), so these are FirstNet's own peering relationships, not a resale of someone else's routes. Internationally, peering extends to further points such as Amsterdam, Marseilles and Brazil, alongside capacity on seven or more undersea cable systems with automatic rerouting.
On top of exchange peering, FirstNet runs direct private peering with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, AWS, Google Cloud and major content delivery networks.
