Which undersea cables and international hubs does FirstNet use?

National Footprint & Global Reach · Answered by FirstNet Technology Services

Short answer

FirstNet carries international traffic across seven or more undersea cable systems, including WACS, EASSy, SEACOM and 2Africa, with automatic rerouting when one is interrupted. It maintains multi-peer transit and peering at global hubs including LINX London, New York, Frankfurt and Singapore, with further international peering points such as Amsterdam, Marseilles and Brazil.

In detail

The diversity matters because international performance depends on where traffic exits South Africa and how it is routed. If a cable is cut or a region is congested, traffic moves to alternate paths automatically. How this shows up across services:

  • Business fibre: international contention is limited to a maximum of 1:4, and only during undersea cable failures.
  • Dedicated Internet Access: dedicated 1:1 contention on international traffic, with peering in hubs including London, New York, Brazil, Germany, Marseilles and Singapore.
  • Domestic subsea: FirstNet was the first client on 2Africa's Durban to Cape Town segment, which avoids terrestrial fibre cuts and vandalism.
  • Local traffic: direct peering at NAPAfrica, JINX, CINX and DINX keeps South African traffic in the country.
